Understanding 3-Way Hold
3-way markets (like soccer 1X2) have higher holds than 2-way markets because there are more outcomes for the book to juice. A typical 2-way market might have 4-5% hold, while 3-way markets often run 6-10%.
How 3-Way Hold is Calculated
Hold = (1/Home Decimal + 1/Draw Decimal + 1/Away Decimal - 1) × 100
Example: Home -120 (1.833), Draw +280 (3.80), Away +240 (3.40)
Hold = (0.545 + 0.263 + 0.294 - 1) × 100 = 10.2%
Example: Home -120 (1.833), Draw +280 (3.80), Away +240 (3.40)
Hold = (0.545 + 0.263 + 0.294 - 1) × 100 = 10.2%
Soccer Betting Strategy
- Line shop: 3-way hold varies wildly between books (4% to 12%+)
- Consider draw no bet: 2-way markets have lower holds
- Asian handicaps: Often have tighter markets than 1X2
- Watch for value on draws: Books often overprice favorites
Why Draw Odds Are Important
The draw is unique to 3-way markets and represents significant value opportunity. Draws occur in 25-28% of soccer matches historically, but implied probabilities often underweight this.
